Mixed media …

Mixed media. It’s everywhere. What is it?

Mixed_media - definition

The ‘mixed media’ used refers to papers, paints, pencils, inks, photos, metal, plastic fabrics, fibres, etc.

It’s an assemblage of all things 2D and 3D.

Last year the Adelaide Royal Show introduced, for the first time, a category called ‘Mixed Media Layout, any subject‘ in the Open Art and Craft scrapbooking section. I’ve not done much mixed media so I thought I would give this a go. With a family photo.

I started with a 12″ x 12″ white cardstock. I machine stitched black scrapbooking paper onto the cardstock.

The fun stuff came with paint, ink, texture paste and spray mists for the background. Messy hands stuff! I used different stencils and stamps with texture paste and with embossing powder, bubble wrap with black paint and a script stamp with black ink..

Adding a photo was the next step. I had initially started with a black and white family photo. I assumed it would be easier to choose papers and embellishments. I got all my papers and embellishments and started assembling. The layout looked okay. I then swapped the black and white photo with the colour photo. I have to say the colour photo looked so much better. I was worried about the colours of the clothing clashing – I needn’t have worried.

To lift the photo off the background paper, I matted the photo on yellow patterned paper, scribbled a frame around the photo and then added an additional mat of red corrugated cardboard to the photo.

The embellishments were next. What better way to add a quote than to use a dymo label – it’s old school and quick and easy. It was important to date the photo so I stuck a date label sticker to a banner tag. The eyelet on the tag gave me the idea to add a heart pin. A bulldog clip completed the cluster.

In the opposite corner, I needed black and white embellishments. I stamped the word ‘celebrate’ and used chipboard thickers for the main title. To balance out the red colour from the Kaisermist spray under the dymo label I attached a Becky Higgins flair to a fussy cut sun. (The sun is from one of my favourite patterned papers – Kaisercraft’s Sunshine from the Fun In The Sun collection.)

In the other 2 corners I went for colour and texture. I fussy cut some flowers from 2 different patterned papers, added arrow wooden veneers and die cut embellishments.
